Peru government-opposition rapprochement may not last
Subject
Executive-congressional relations.
Significance
A strong vote of confidence in the new cabinet opens the way to a more collaborative phase in relations between the executive and legislature. Under President Martin Vizcarra’s predecessor, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, a state of semi-permanent constitutional gridlock stymied policymaking. However, without a party to back him, Vizcarra finds himself dependent on the Fujimorista Fuerza Popular (FP) with its large majority in Congress.
Impacts
- Overall, policy is unlikely to change radically.
- Business elites will support the government’s economic plans.
- Rooting out corruption from public life will be a challenge.
- Political reforms are unlikely to revive faith in democratic institutions.
