Prospects for Southern Africa in 2018

Significance

Significant political transitions will take place in several states where longstanding rulers have either been ousted (Zimbabwe) or stepped aside (Angola). Meanwhile, fiscal crises are prompting growing popular dissatisfaction (Mozambique) and increasing government desperation for international financial assistance (Zambia). A new ANC leader in South Africa will have to arrest the party’s dwindling fortunes, while distancing him- or herself from the unpopular national president, Jacob Zuma.
