Significance

Trump’s administration has not yet developed a clear and full policy towards South-east Asia, but his team has focused on gaining ASEAN states’ cooperation in US efforts to rein in Pyongyang.

Impacts

North Korea is unlikely to be removed from the ASEAN Regional Forum.
Trump’s shift to tightening sanctions enforcement increases the sanctions risk for South-east Asian individuals and firms.
Diminishing their trade with North Korea will have little impact on South-east Asian states’ trade balances.
