Risk of terror attack on Maldives resort is high
Subject
Political instability and militant threat in the Maldives.
Significance
Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen in July ordered the military to lock down the country’s parliament, obstructing a no-confidence vote in the speaker that would have undermined Yameen’s control of the legislature. Around 200 Maldivian militants are thought to have travelled to Iraq and Syria in recent years. The Maldives economy is heavily dependent on tourism.
Impacts
- Yameen may use the judiciary to bolster executive control.
- Saudi Arabia may increase financing for constructing mosques and training clerics.
- China may step up efforts to acquire an island for military development.
- Any attack on a tourist resort may prompt capital flight from private Indian investors.
