Mexico State election will have national impact
Tuesday, February 14, 2017
Significance
While Mexico State is just one of four states scheduled to go to the polls on June 4, the result of its election will be the most important by far, influencing projections for, and potentially the result of, the 2018 presidential election.
Impacts
- Having lost seven states in the 2016 gubernatorial elections, the PRI is under enormous pressure to hold Mexico State.
- A split in the anti-PRI vote could see the PRI win with only around 30% of the ballots.
- Lopez Obrador's growing strength may ultimately lead to a PAN president in 2018.
