Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present Morocco's main situation in terms of literacy and illiteracy rates and how public libraries can assist in the development of literacy and education.

Design/methodology/approach

The research collected data and statistics available on the Ministry of Education's website, as well as a literature review of the existing research in this regard.

Findings

Data shows a lack of support in the field of education and adult literacy and limited access to library services.

Originality/value

The current study is the first and unique one to provide data and analyses on the literacy situation in Morocco.
