American Cancer Society opts for online learning

Article Type: Notes and news From: Industrial and Commercial Training, Volume 46, Issue 2

The American Cancer Society has set up an online-learning center to enable it to take a blended approach to training its three million volunteers across the US.

As a charity, the American Cancer Society relies on the goodwill of volunteers who give up their time to support cancer patients and their families and raise funds. All volunteers require training and the society has implemented e-learning and live webinars to help to save the time they are giving up to help the cause.

Learning-solutions company Kineo has implemented the online-learning center, providing volunteers with easy access to learning content at home and on their personal computers and mobile telephones. One key element of the project has been to customize the look of the system and its navigation so that volunteers feel at home. This was achieved by creating a branded interface based on the American Cancer Society main public website.

Steve Harris, senior learning-technologies consultant at the American Cancer Society, commented: “Our No. 1 goal was to create a site that our volunteers would feel comfortable using and respond to positively. They range from high-school pupils to people who are retired so anything we implemented had to be user-friendly. We get great comments about how easy the learning center is to use and the help it provides to volunteers in finding what they need.”
