Abstract

Claims that there is renewed pressure for an indpendent food agency to be established so that food safety and consumer protection decisions can be taken in a system where there is thought to be a better balance between the various pressure groups interested in such matters. States that, whatever the political conclusion on this, there are considerable practical issues that have to be examined and determined before any such agency could operate effectively. Suggests that in the end, the merits of the matter are probably presentational and political rather than offering a signficantly better route for reaching appropriate food safety decisions.
