A stormy lesson
Abstract
Discusses the storms and high winds of 1987 and 1990 which affected much of the country, and asks why so much damage was caused to buildings when Building Regulations and Codes of Practice were designed to cope with such conditions. Outlines the extent of the 1990 damage and posits reasons for the structural failures. Explores damage which occurred to new buildings and gives suggestions as to where the designs were at fault. Calls for alteration to the existing Codes of Practice and examines the lessons which should have been learnt by the construction industry, insurers and by legislators.
