New report on psychological therapies and people who have intellectual disabilities

Article Type: News From: Advances in Mental Health and Intellectual Disabilities, Volume 7, Issue 5

In 2004 the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCP) published a report on “Psychotherapy and learning disability”. In 2012 the report came up for review and it was agreed that this should be considered by the faculties for learning disabilities of the RCP and the British Psychological Society. A small working group was formed including one original author of the 2004 report, Dr Roger Banks and volunteers from both faculties. Mandy Irvine from Belfast was elected to chair the group. At the first meeting it was agreed that a new report was needed in view of the developments in the scope and application of the psychological therapies now being delivered in services. Thus the aim for the new report will be to contain information the needs of the population and the range of psychotherapeutic interventions available to meet them. Information will be included on specific adaptations made to increase accessibility and information will also be included on the available evidence. Then service delivery models will be considered along with workforce needs. Finally we would like to make suggestions for good practice, audit and research. The report should be completed for 2014.
