The product data management market

Brian Gott (Principal Consultant at Cambashi Ltd, Cambridge, UK. An aircraft and nuclear engineer, in 1969 he joined the newly formed CAD Centre in Cambridge to head the group responsible for developing industrial applications and marketing the technology within industry. In 1980 he formed and managed CAD Centre Consultants, a group of experienced engineers who assisted some 250 UK engineering companies to select and implement appropriate technology at the height of the CAD/CAM boom. Between 1984 and 1989 he was managing director of two companies during their start‐up phase: Cambridge Control Limited, specializing in computer‐aided control engineering software and design services; and the European branch of Computer Design Inc., a US vendor of computer solutions for the clothing industry. Abstract

Clarifies issues relating to product data management (PDM) since a survey of 600 European manufacturing company managers placed it at the top of the list for computer technology investment. Discusses the acceleration in PDM technology since 1993. Highlights the key differences between PDM and other computer‐aided technologies.
