MOOCs and the library
Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this column is to examine the current discussion of massive open online courses (MOOCs) and the library's involvement in this worldwide movement.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper takes the form of a literature review and commentary on this topic that has been addressed by professionals, researchers and practitioners.
Findings
The study finds that MOOCs may offer colleges the opportunity to accept the democratization of learning for all who wish to engage. Librarians have a chance to extend their influence in the development of MOOCs as an integral component in this new model.
Originality/value
The value in addressing this issue is to suggest the benefits that the library can bring to this burgeoning form of online learning.
